Starting a discussion on the making and design of a violin scroll lends itself to a few kilometres of solid text in which Artistic styles, the mechanics of its construct, the making processes and of course the views and opinions of experts and makers on earth are many.
So, for the sake of easy understanding and reference I will begin at what is often seen as the top of the violin’s history although it is not necessarily the beginning of its making process or the starting point from where it originates.
In my view there are no ‘rules’ when carving a scroll, other than that it should be done with care, art and personal perfection; unless you intend on making a violin that resembles the work of the early masters.
Below are various examples of different scrolls which allow us to see the differences in style, impression and interpretation starting with the initial premis of design and the great Italian makers with no real end of evolution seeing that there are still many instruments being made with both traditional and new innovative flair.
With time, the intention is that there will be a lot more information added to these discussion based articles as user participation grows and as we gather and collect available information from our partners and users.
While we are in the process of developing a discussion board plese feel free to send any views adn discussions to the editor@fiddlefax.co.za
