"... an opportunity for South African youth to grow through music"
The word 'Melodi' is SeTswana for 'whistling'. From a young age, we learn to make this sound - one of our first attempts at music and for some the only way they will be able to express themselves musically.
Melodi Music Trust has been founded to reach out to those previously disadvantaged children of South Africa, by giving them the opportunity to read, write and play music.
Currently, one Sowetan based project is in operation. It has and remains to give over 30 children the chance to grow musically, by providing the instruments, music and professional tutors to enable the best tuition possible.
About the Melodi Music Trust
• Open to any child, 9 years and upwards.
• Descant and Alto recorders are the primary instruments, followed by Tenor and Bass recorders.
• On reaching the required level of playing the recorder, pupils advance to orchestral instruments.
• Pupils are provided with an instrument of their own for practice purposes.
• Advanced pupils receive private lessons during the week on a one-to-one basis.
To-date, the project has been able to produce a recorder ensemble, which is frequently requested to play at functions, and has also recently held successful concerts in Soweto and Johannesburg. Currently they are well known for their captivating sound produced on a consort of recorders.
Since the beginning of 2005 through sponsorship and donations in kind, we have been able to advance students to Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoons, Violins, Cellos and Double Basses.
