Nico was born and grew up in Bloemfontein. He studied Double Bass with Wolfgang Nitsch and Piano with Catherine Struthers and completed his B. Mus. and B. Mus. Hons. Degrees at the University of the Orange Free State.

After a brief spell as a music teacher (while completing his B. Mus. Hons), he moved to Johannesburg to join the then National Orchestra as organizer (personnel) and Double Bass player. With the restructuring of the orchestra back into two orchestras, he continued in this position with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO).

With the demise of the NSO, Nico qualified as a chef at the Barnes Street Culinary Studio under renowned chef and teacher, Suzi Holtshauzen, obtaining the City and Guild’s Diploma with distinction.

Since then, Nico has been a freelance musician in the Gauteng area.
Nico remains active as a Double Bass teacher and teaches at St John’s College in Houghton and at the Melodi Music Project in Soweto.

When not playing or teaching, Nico also co-owns and runs a small catering business called Nico se Kombuis with his wife, Debbie.

Nico has one daughter, one cat and two dogs.
